Fasting Day 5: Purple Power!

No lie. Purple is my favorite color.

Another true statement: this smoothie was not a good one. Def need to rework this recipe.

I was slightly apprehensive about my smoothie today at the start. It is less smoothie, and more pureed beets. I sipped my morning lemon tonic as I put this together.

So here is what I did:

  • 4 cups cut raw beets
  • 1 C frozen blueberries (or fresh)
  • 1 bottle pomegranate juice (this would probably have been better to use the whole fruit, but I hate the seeds and was worried that blending them would make the smoothie gritty.)
  • Jelly of one fresh coconut

I wasn’t sure about adding beets and bananas. Seemed weird, but it wasn’t smooth, so I added 1.

Once I pureed it all, I got again 2 X 24 ounce cups.

It was waaaaay to beety. I should have done maybe one cup of beets and a lot more berries. The rest would have been fine. It was so thick and fibery, I only drank part of one. I also drank my water bottle of lemonade.

But that’s okay! Failure is how we learn and this was just an opportunity to revise my recipe.

I took the full one that I didn’t touch and I poured it into ice cube trays. I can throw one or two cubes in my usual morning smoothie. (I love freezing cubes of greens, coconut water, etc. to add to my smoothies.)

As for the rest, I decided to just add some berries! I also added another half a banana and a bit of honey.

That filled up that cup and I will drink that tomorrow. Two days of purple, what could be better? And this one actually tastes good. Bonus!

But. I was hungry having only drunk 1/2 of one smoothie, and taught a yoga class, so I did what I had planned for tomorrow and made a lovely salad of tomatoes, cucumber, celery, avocado, balsamic vinegar, olive oil, salt & pepper.

I ate it REALLY slowly so as not to freak out my system, and it was delicious! I had another glass of lemonade to wash that down.

Tomorrow, I will do the purple smoothie and another salad just like this for dinner.

I still don’t feel hungry. This morning I woke up with a headache and wanted to scream! Four days of no alcohol, caffeine, dairy, gluten, processed foods, additives, refined sugar, and a headache!??!?! Because I have low sodium, I thought that might be the issue. I added some salt to my lemon drink. At any rate, the headache went away and I worked a full day with no issues except trying to choke down my chewy beet smoothie!

I have almost made the week. Woohoo! My skin looks good, my tummy is flat, my energy is great. I know I can do two more days.

I’m looking forward to yogurt on Friday as my first non-raw food and, obviously, wine on Saturday!
